General Questions

Find answers to common questions about our gyroplane adventures in our FAQs section.

A gyroplane, also known as a gyrocopter, combines the agility of a helicopter with the simplicity of an airplane. Unlike a helicopter, the rotor on a gyroplane is not powered by the engine — it spins freely in the airflow, creating lift. A single engine at the rear drives a pusher propeller, which provides forward thrust. This design makes gyroplanes incredibly stable, safe, and fun to fly.

As a 40+ year fixed wing pilot with experience in ultralights, LSAs and complex, high performance aircraft, I found Caylon Hackler at Fly Gyros Hawaii to be a competent rotorcraft instructor. His MTO sport was meticulously maintained, and his emphasis on safety was superb. Highly recommended.

Absolutely incredible! I've never even been in a small aircraft before, but Caylon made me feel totally safe and confident. I got to take the controls over the Kona coastline - unreal. Easily the highlight of my trip to Hawaii!

This was a birthday gift from my wife - and it was unforgettable. The flight felt safe but thrilling. I even got to fly the gyro myself for a bit. If you're looking for something unique to do on the Big Island, this is it.

With over 3,000 hours in fixed-wing aircraft, I wasn’t sure what to expect in a gyroplane. It blew me away. Caylon’s instruction was top-notch, and the aircraft was impeccably maintained. I left impressed — and wanting more rotor time. I’m already looking for a gyro school near me to get my add-on rating.
